We get a lot of expensive shoes through our doors, and I tend to recommend that people pick up the best they can possibly afford when it comes time to outfit their feet.

Cycling shoes are a vital contact point between rider and machine, one that can easily make or break a ride. Comfort is mandatory and efficiency highly valued. Most cheap shoes simply don’t make the cut. Scott’s Road Team shoes do, but only just.

No, they don’t wrap the foot as luxuriously as a $400 pair of Sidis, nor are they as stiff as Specialized’s $350 S-Works road shoe. They aren’t anywhere near as light as the Mavic Huez or Bontrager RXXXL, either. But that’s just fine, because they’re less than half the price — only $130 — but far more than half as good.
Fit

The Road Team’s uppers are a mix of microfiber and nylon mesh — not the most sophisticated, but perfectly adequate for cooling and support. The material is flexible, conforming to the foot nicely without any jabbing edges or hot spots.

Scott included two features usually found on much more expensive shoes: a Boa lacing system and adjustable insoles. Combined, they offer a level of adjustability rarely found on anything under $200.

The Boa lacing, as always, is fantastic. Just turn the dial clockwise and it cinches the uppers up tightly and evenly. It’s easy to go too tight, actually. In addition to the Boa lacing, the shoes have a single Velcro strap, placed low enough on the foot that I set it once and never touched it again.

The adjustable ErgoLogic insole is modular, with a few different options for arch height, metatarsal pad, and heel cradle. A bit of experimentation led me to the correct combination, and my feet ended up supremely comfortable.
2011 Scott Road Team shoes, outsole

The outsole is just barely stiff enough for my liking. Photo: Caley Fretz

Fit is quite narrow, but overall the Road Teams run true to size. I found the heel cup to be excellent, and never had any issues with slipping.
Function

The Road Teams are actually quite light — not as light as the Mavic or Bontrager options mentioned above, but actually lighter than those $400 Sidis. My pair came in at 506 grams for the pair, or 253 grams per shoe. For reference, the Mavics are about 195 grams per shoe.

The outsole is a nylon/glass fiber mix that is simply not as stiff as a carbon sole. Scott says it has a “stiffness index” of 8. What scale that is on, I have no idea. If 10 is something like a Bont Vaypor, which feels like standing on a 2×4, I’d put the Scott’s closer to 6 or 6.5.

The shoes just barely pass my personal stiffness index. I can’t feel any hugely noticeable flex when I’m on the bike, and I can’t feel the cleats themselves, which can cause hotspots, but I did feel the back of the cleats underfoot while walking around, something I’ve never felt on a stiff carbon sole. I wouldn’t recommend these for larger riders.

The giant air scoop at the front of the outsole is a nice touch on hot days, and the toe and heel bumpers are hard enough to last but aren’t solid plastic, making walking on slippery surfaces a bit easier.
The scoop

A pair of Scott Road Teams is among the most comfortable options anywhere near the $130 price range. They are stiff enough (barely), look halfway decent and have truly excellent uppers, lacing and insoles.

Larger riders, or riders with wide feet, will want to avoid them. But for a budget-minded rider accustomed to the finer uppers and insoles in life, they are a solid choice.

Walking Shoes For Women
These boots are made for walking, the streets of Italy that is. I was concerned with my recent trip to Italy because I knew that cities in Italy are walking cities. While I normally love walking a city, my concern was that this summer I broke my big toe and have been slowly making my way into shoes. I have tennis shoes (for working out only) and high heels. So, I purchased a pair of booties just prior to my departure and hoped they would support me through my days in Rome, the Tuscany Region and Venice. You see, in Italy you don’t see many tennis shoes. It’s all about fashion. The average person is fashionable but their old sidewalks and uneven pavement are murder on heels. Booties don’t fail me now.

I actually wore my booties on the plane. They have one zipper at the heel which makes them easy to take off and put back on. They have a one inch heel and are of the softest leather. Boy, were they comfortable even after my feet swelled a bit. Can’t seem to lay off the wine!

We began touring right after arriving with only enough time to check into our room and freshen up. First stop, Rome and a walk around the outside of the Colosseum. What was evident to me after listening to our guide is that my history of the Colosseum was derived from movies. While Hollywood stays pretty close to the true history, some creative embellishment has been implemented. For example; As told by our guide, the symbol for “to the death” is not a thumbs down. The gesture is made with the thumb to side with a swipe across the throat. Another misrepresentation pointed out by our guide is that masses of Christians were persecuted at the Colosseum. The Colosseum was the arena for wild animals brought in from Africa battling during the day and gladiators battling in the afternoon. How are the feet? So far so good! Later that afternoon the Trevi Fountain and The Spanish Steps. Absolutely love the energy at both. Filled with crowds of tourists from all over the world taking photos and just hanging around along with locals busying about. Trevi Fountain, Fontana di Trevi, is a beautiful site and half the fun is jockeying for position to throw your coin in, in hopes of a return on your investment of returning to Rome, a tradition of legend that doesn’t seem to be lost on anyone. It’s a beautiful piece of art that stands out among the crowds and chaos. The fountain was completed in 1762 by Nicoli Salvi, who was commissioned by Pope Clement XII. It took 30 years to be built. The Spanish Steps or Piazza de Spanga ascends to the French Church Trinita dei Monti. At the bottom of the steps is Fontana della Barcaccia, the fountain, shaped like a small boat. The 137 steps in three tiers begs a climb to the top for a fantastic view of Rome and the square below. So far my booties are still comfortable. Suggestion: Do your reading on the history ahead of time and do these two sites on your own so you can take your time and soak up the scenery. Side bar: On our walk from The Trevi Fountain to The Spanish Steps we window shopped. Store window after store window wowed us with the most stylish shoes and hand bags. The highest heels I’ve ever seen and the sharpest styles. Red ones, black ones, ones covered in crystals, feathers or fringes. The most outlandish…a pig bag. A large bag shaped like a pig covered in crystals!

After our day of touring the hunger pangs started knocking. We gathered the group and headed to Renovatio La Soffitta for our welcome dinner. La Soffitta is a small restaurant, as most are in Italy and is located near The Vatican. When in Rome, well you know the rest…we had a traditional five course meal starting with Antipasti (dried meat selection, cheese selection, olives and marinated vegetables). First Course or Primi Piatti or Pasta course; Rigatoni alla Marinara and meat lasagna. Third course insalata or salad. Main course or Secondi Piatti, Saltimbocca alla Roma, a thin piece of veal with a lemon sauce. Fifth course DESSERT. We had a selection of different Italian desserts, a lemon cheese cake made with ricotta cheese, of course tiramisu and a variety of tarts Italian donuts, one was soaked in Ameretto that was like taking a shot.

Nothing to do with my booties, my feet needed a well deserved break and now with my belly full, my body needed a good stretch and a good night sleep.

I’ve been to Rome a couple of times and had never gone to The Vatican Museums. Actually, I never had an interest in going. I know what you’re thinking. Who’s not interested in The Vatican. I can’t tell you why, I just wasn’t. Needless to say, I am so very glad I did. It was fa-bu-lous! The architecture, the paintings, the tapestries, the history, the serenity. I could go on and on. There are currently 13 Vatican Museums that make up the complex housing works of art through the centuries with different Popes adding to the collection over time. It was founded by Popes Clement XIV and Pius VI. But of course the most famous are the Sistine Chapel and the works of Michelangelo. There’s a photo I took and I’m not sure it captured what my natural eye lens saw but it’s of a group of cardinals in a corridor. This sounds simple enough but the lighting and placement spoke volumes. We were then in the midst of a parade of cardinals with varied styles, different head coverings and swagger, yes swagger. One had on a fedora and a top coat draped over his shoulders. They were of different ethnicity from different parts of the world. What a treat! From the beginning of tour outside of the cathedral to the end finishing with Swiss Guards colorfully clad, I was enthralled! The Vatican City is a must see. By the way…booties and feet still feeling fine! Suggestion: Go on a guided tour so you’ll know what your seeing and to skip the long lines.

Where we stayed: Hotel Giulio Cesare or as we would say Julius Cesar. This is a four star property located at Via degli Scipioni and near St. Peters Basilica. If you go to the roof top at night you get a beautiful view of the Basilica. This is a 19th century partician villa that has every bit of Italian charm.

This year’s walking shoe review features some old favorites and some new favorites we wiggled our feet into. Some are good for fitness walking, some are good when traveling, some are good off-road and some will cover any ground you’re willing to walk over. Read our reviews, buy yourself a pair and get moving.
Dr. Andrew Weil Integrative Footwear

Best For: Fitness walking, everyday, travel

Echoing the healthy, balanced lifestyle that Dr. Weil advocates is his new line of shoes. The line includes a women’s-only style fittingly named Balance, which offers Orthaheel Technology that helps keep your foot, ankle and leg in line to deliver proper support, comfort and alignment. Designed by a podiatrist, the Balance comes with a removable orthotic and cushioned collar and tongue for maximum comfort. We liked the instant comfort and exceptional support these shoes provided, and that we could wear them while working out and hanging out. (weilbeing.com)
Hi-Tec

Best For: Light hiking, fitness walking, everyday

The women’s Hi-Tec V-Lite Nighthawk HPi is a great Arizona shoe. It’s light, but it has a solid sole that won’t get torn apart by the rough desert landscape. The upper is breathable and flexible, and it has a “cage” that protects the foot at important contact points (toe, heel, side) in case you stub your toe or sideswipe a cactus. The sole’s traction will keep you on your feet on the road and off, and though the laces are short, they get the job done without getting in your way. (hi-tec.com, 800-521-1698)
Kuru

Best For: Hiking, everyday, travel

Dressy enough to be worn out at night, rugged enough to kick up some dirt and comfortable enough to wear day in and day out, the men’s and women’s Insight won’t give out when you’re just digging in. Lightweight and durable, the Insights were comfortable from day one. Though none of our testers suffer from plantar fasciitis, the Insight has positive feedback from those who do, which may be because of the serious cushioning that left us feeling like we were walking on clouds. (kurufootwear.com, 877-211-5878)
New Balance

Best For: Fitness walking

One of the things we’ve always liked about New Balance is that they offer different widths. Specifically, they have sizes to fit wide feet—both on men and women. Also, where most “fitness walkers” are aimed towards women, the 850 is for men, too. The balance board technology the 850 employs helps you burn more calories and increases muscle tone as you walk. They look less bulky than the typical toning shoe and weigh a lot less—only 10.9 ounces. (newbalance.com, 800-253-7463)
Rockport

Best For: Everyday, travel

Rockport’s Tyler Sneaker is perfect for shopping trips and long work days. This lace-up shoe has a narrow profile and a padded tongue for added comfort. The footbed is made with Adidas’ adiPRENE and adiPRENE+ technologies, which adds cushioned protection for foot landings and response during take offs. After a coffee spill, we learned the leather upper is easy to clean and the rubber sole provides good traction. (rockport.com, 866-290-6431)
Ryn

Best For: Hiking, everyday, fitness walking, travel

When it comes to an off-road rocker sole, the Ryn Trail shoe offers the most stability we’ve encountered. Featuring a solid sole with excellent grip, but still maintaining a light weight overall, Ryn’s Trail has a special shape that no only reduces the stress walking an standing puts on your lower back, hips, legs and ankles, but also supports your natural gait and encourages more movement. Unlike some rockers, the Ryn features a shape that discourages toppling and “flat tires.” (rynamerica.com, 208-287-3646)

I have worn these for many years and will keep buying them as long as I can buy them. I usually get a year out of them. Very light but supportive. If you’re looking for something comfortable and durable these are very good shoes and conservative enough that you can wear them working in an office.

best walking shoe

I keep buying these shoes because they are so comfortable and last so long. Whenever a pair finally wears out, I order another pair of the exact same shoe. This is a very good product and they arrived in just three days.

Rockport Pro-Walker Shoes

I have owned this shoe in the past and am always looking for a good price when I need another pair. I found that on Amazon.com. As for the shoe, it feels like you have had them for a year the first time you put them on. Great shoe!!

Sneakers for father

This was a gift for my father on fathers day. He tells me they are very comfortable. So I guess according to him, these are very good sneakers.

Great shoes!

Best shoes I have ever worn… very comfortable. Sporty yet casual so can wear with almost any clothes. Have worn Rockport Prowalkers for many years. Was very pleasantly surprised to find it at Amazon.com. However, Rockport might be phasing this model out as I couldn’t find it at their website. So I bought the four pairs that were available at Amazon.com, which incidentally, was at a very good price, too.

Pure comfort from the start,

I’ve always heard Rockport made comfortable shoes, and I can now confirm this is a fact. No break-in period required with these shoes, if you walk a lot during the course of your day, this is the pair of shoes for you.

Built to Last

I bought my first pair of Rockport Prowalkers in 1993 and wore them 1-2 days/week since then. I cannot believe how long they’ve lasted and how comfortable they are. The new pair are great.

great shoes good price

great work shoe i walk all day so i need a good pair that dont wear out to easy. i was buying cheap shoes that made my feet hurt at the end of the day but these didnt do that.

My Favorite Shoe,

I’ve been a sales representative for over 20 years. During that time, I’ve probably owned more than 20 pairs of Rockport Prowalkers. The main reasons are comfort, support and durability. When I can afford it, I’ll buy one pair for everyday use and one for church. When the everyday pair wears out, I’ll start wearing the church pair and buy a new one.

I used to buy expensive leather dress oxfords for work. I liked the way they looked, but my work shoes tend to take a beating. I was having to resole them once or twice a year. The Prowalkers are more comfortable and last longer. They’re not cheap, but they’re worthy the money.

As long as they make them, I’ll be buying them.

My Rockports Rock!

These shoes allow me to be comfortable while looking good as a medical professional. I appreciate the extra width, the sizing is accurate. I liked them so much, I ordered a second pair the day after I received my first. I’m very satisfied with the Prowalker by Rockport.

Great shoes! Great price!,

I just bought these shoes on amazon after my brother bought the same shoes for more at Macys. It was the first time that I bought a pair of shoes online without trying them on. I was a little apprehensive that they might not fit, but they fit perfectly. I guess there’s always a first time and I will come back for more stuff.

As usual

I really enjoy wearing Rockport shoes. They fit well, as usual, right out of the box and there is never any breaking in period. A perfectly light weight walking shoe. Best shoes for the money !

Rockport Men’s ProWalker

Since Rockport introduced the Men’s ProWalker, I have purchased at least a dozen pairs. They are the most comfortable leisure shoe I have worn. They are durable and have a long life for everyday wearing. In today’s economy, one can be sure of getting his money’s worth in value.

Walking on air,

My Rockport shoes are so comfortable i harley know how not to wear them everyday. Wearing them is almost like walking on air a joy to wear!

I have worn this style of shoe for years. It is a comfortable shoe. Of course, I would suggest that you try the shoe in a store first before purchasing on the internet because you can’t judge the fit by a picture on a website. Since I had originally purchased the shoe in a store, I now purchased it on Amazon, and the quality and fit seem to be consistent.

My husband has been wearing this brand of shoe for over 20 years. He always has two pair working. One for yard work and one for wearing when we leave the house. They always fit, wear for years and look sharp when he wants to dress us a little. We never have to worry about the fit when ordering as they are always true to size. He is able to take them straight out of the box and wear with no breaking in period. We now have to purchase these over the internet as our local stores no longer carry them. Hopefully Rockport will not discontinue making these wonderful shoes.

Great shoe,

These are the only shoes my husband wears for work. He’s on his feet quite a bit, and considering the wear they go through, they hold up relatively well. As I said, these are the only shoes he buys for work.

Rockport Prowalking shoes

My Dad has very flat and painful feet. He has had quite a few surgeries on his feet. He says these shoes are so comfortable they are like slippers. That is high praise from him. At 87 comfort is very important to him. I highly recommend these shoes.

Walk til you drop

These are the most comfortable walking shoes going. I have had many pairs over the years and love every one. However, occasionally some sales clerk will convince me that they have something better. I buy…I’m sorry and then I get another pair of Prowalkers. They are light and you can wear them forever without that tight heavy feeling that so many “walking” shoes get.

Great Shoes,

These are Great shoes, I have been walking 3 1/2 mil. per day in them starting the first day out of the box!!

Rockport Prowalker shoes,

Shoes arrived on-time, as-advertised. Comfortable shoes that I have had before and know what size I need.

My experience with Rockport Shoes

I first purchased a pair of Rockports 13 years ago for a trip to England, where my wife and I knew we would do lots of walking. Since then, I have purchased 6 more pairs of them. I love them. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever owned. I am retired now and that is all I ever wear. The soles just never wear out. I would recommend them to anyone.

Very comfortable shoes!

I’m using these shoes for their stated purpose – walking! This is my fourth pair of Rockport Walking shoes, and I wouldn’t wear anything else for casual use. They are well-built, durable, and most of all, comfortable! I try to walk at least ten miles a week for exercise, and I get over a year and a half out of each pair. Definitely recommended!

Comfort, fit, look, and durability,

The Rockport Pro Walker is an item that I would recommend to anyone looking for a quality casual shoe. I have been wearing them for many years. They take no “breaking in’ and fit well immediately. For someone who has experienced foot problems in the past, they are a pleasure to walk in. The shoes show excellent durablity, remaining wearable for a long time. They are well made and have a conservative yet sporty look. You could find no better value. The highest recommendation.

Thank you Rockport

These Rockport shoes have greatly helped my sore, sore feet. Since being in the military I have had problems with my feet. These are the first shoes to give me a measure of relief!

shoe heaven

Over the years I have tried a number of different walking shoes. Some, were not bad at all.Several years ago,a friend suggested that I should try rockport shoes. What a difference, these are truly the most comfortable shoes I have purchased.Besides being comfortable they also are quite durable. No need to say more/rockports are first class all the way.

Prowalker from Amazon,

As always this shoe fits me and is my favorite. I have several pairs and wear them until they are only good for paint shoes. Amazon consistently has the best price.

shoes

I have owned Prowalkers for years. This the 5th or 6th pair. They are solid, comfortable, and wear well and are reasonable.

Outstanding Quality, Value, Comfort and Durability

I have been a Rockport consumer for many years and have never found better products for comfort and value. The fact that the wide model fits my feet extremely well with no heel slippage is great. The Prowalker is definitely a very fitting name as I do a lot of walking. Amazon.com does a fantastic job in delivering the product and keeping the customer informed; I ordered the shoes on a Friday and they were delivered the following Wednesday.

Richard Schickel has assembled, organized, edited, and provided an Introduction to 33 essays about one of the greatest film actors, Charles Chaplin (April 16, 1889 – December 25, 1977). Their authors’ diverse perspectives on his life and career provide an excellent supplement to Stephen Weissman’s recently published Chaplin: A Life in Film as well as to Charlie Chaplin’s Own Story (as told to Rose Wilder Lane) and Chaplin’s My Autobiography as well as David Robinson’s Chaplin: His Life and Art.

Weissman is among the contributors to The Essential Chaplin and in his essay, “Charlie Chaplin’s Film Heroines,” he observes: “It was the loss [of Chaplin's mother] and the scars it left that later shaped Chaplin’s development of an alter-ego screen character whose core identity (in the feature length films) was the rescue and repair of damaged and fallen women. And of all his rescue films it was The Gold Rush which Chaplin later said was the one picture by which he most wanted to be remembered by posterity.” (Page 66)

Note: In the “Afterword” to his biography, Weissman provides an especially interesting discussion of contradictory opinions about the legitimacy of Chaplin’s Own Story that appeared in a series of 29 installments in the San Francisco Bulletin from July 5 to August 4, 1915. Weissman believes that Lane transcribed Chaplin’s comments as accurately as she could. Robinson dismisses Own Story as “romantic and misleading nonsense.” Weissman acknowledges that “Neither Robinson’s theory nor mine is provable” and suggests that his reader take her or his choice.

Here are other brief excerpts from The Essential Chaplin.

“So far one man, and only one, has shown that he entirely understands the new art of the cinema. Only one man has shown that he knows how to use this art as if it were a keyboard where all the elements of sense and feeling that determine the attitude and firm of things merge and convey in one cinematic expression the complex revelation of their inner life and quality…In him the human drama possesses an instrument of expression of which people hitherto have had no suspicion, an instrument which, in the future, will be the most powerful of all – namely: a screen upon which falls a shaft of light; our eyes toward s it; and behind the eyes the heart.” (From Elie Faure’s The Art of Cineplastics, 1923, Page 77 in The Essential Chaplin)

Chaplin’s “impatience to have done with the adulation – which he once significantly remarked `is given, after all, to the little fellow, not me’ – brought him unfairly the reputation of a misanthrope. Simply, but hopelessly, he discovered, after the first return to New York, that he could enjoy no such luxury of choice as Nat Goodwin recommended: `Pick out one or two friends and be satisfied to imagine the rest.” (Alistair Cooke, Six Men, 1956, Page 127 in The Essential Chaplin)

Chaplin “is the only comic star in the movies who does not employ a gag-writer: he makes everything up himself; so that, instead of the stereotyped humor of even the best of his competitors, most of whose tricks could be interchanged among them without anyone knowing the difference, he gives us jokes that, however crude, have an unmistakable quality of personal fancy. Furthermore, he has made it a practice to use his gags as points of departure for genuine comic situations.” (Edmund Wilson, “The New Chaplin Comedy,” 1925, Page 171 in The Essential Chaplin)

“Destiny shifts us here and there upon the checkerboard of life, and we know not the purpose behind the moves. His father’s death brought a safe, comfortable world crashing down about Charlie Chaplin’s head, and plunged his mother, his brother and himself into poverty. But poverty is not a life sentence. It is a challenge. To some it is more – an opportunity. So it was to the child of the theater. In the kaleidoscopic life of London’s mean streets he found tragedy and comedy – and learned that their springs lie side by side…So we need not regret the shadows that fell over Charlie Chaplin’s life. Without them his gifts might have shone less brightly, and the whole world would have been the poorer. Genius is essentially a hardy plant. It thrives in the east wind. It withers in a hothouse.” (Winston Churchill, “Everybody’s Language,” Collier’s magazine, 1935, Pages 206 and 207 in The Essential Chaplin)

The appeal and value of these and other essays will, of course, depend on what each reader seeks to understand about Chaplin, an immensely complicated person who was (as Schickel explains) “driven by his relentless ego, by his helpless need for an audience to dominate, to lead. All the tragedies of his life stemmed from those drives and needs.” To Schickel’s credit, he has selected essays that (together) trace the key influences on Chaplin’s development throughout childhood and adolescence as well as during his early success on stage, his subsequent career in films, the controversies associated with his later years, and the period of recognition and awards he enjoyed just prior to his death.

Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out Weissman’s aforementioned biography, Chaplin: A Life in Film, and Robinson’s Chaplin: His Life and Art as well as Charlie Chaplin’s Own Story (as told to Rose Wilder Lane) and Chaplin’s My Autobiography.

Nearly 30 essays from film critic Richard Schickel deserve ongoing recommendation and mention for any Chaplain fan

Nearly thirty essays from film critic Richard Schickel deserve ongoing recommendation and mention for any Chaplain fan, whether newcomer or seasoned. Schickel gathers the best criticisms of Chaplin’s life and works from contributors – many of whom were his contemporaries – and pairs them to assessments of Chaplin’s films from start to finish. The idea is to place under one cover the very best writing about Chaplin from non-movie-reviewer writers: the result is an analysis of genius and methods rather than films alone, and one which holds up well against movie reviewer surveys or biographies alone.

formidable work

A well-researched well-written book. My only beef with all of the civil war background stuff, etc., was that it substantially delays the appearance of Mr. McTell.

Once Mr. McTell finally shows up, the book moves at a lively pace and contains a wealth of information about Mr. McTell previously unknown to the general public. And as can be expected, Mr. McTell turns out to be a much more complex character who lived a more complex life than what one might expect.

Although he never had a hit record, Willie lived a decent working-class life as a local musician and his superior musical skills earned him the respect of both white and black audiences as well as the respect of his fellow musicians. Willie might’ve been riding the rails, all right, but he wasn’t riding in any box cars. Rather, he’d be working his way through the passenger cars earning his living playing for tips.

Again, Mr. Gray deserves to be commended for his hard work on this project. All blues historians owe him a pat on the back and the rest of us know much more about Mr. McTell than we ever would’ve without Gray’s efforts. His approach was/is much like a good reporter sniffing out an important story dispite the fact that Willie had been dead almost 50 years before work on the book started. Indeed, most of the ‘first-person’ sources (people who actually knew Willie in person) died before the book made it to publication.

You can’t have everything but if you could I wish Mr. Gray would’ve researched more information about Willie’s guitars. As a guitar player myself, I am curious.

Author’s Journey Tells Blind Willie McTell’s Story

Blind Willie McTell, like Robert Johnson and other legendary figures, never had a hit record. When he died in 1959, after decades of playing on the streets and clubs of Atlanta, Georgia, he was largely forgotten – but today is celebrated. Several of his songs, most notably “Statesboro Blues,” have become staples of blues and blues-rock. Mystery author David Fulmer made McTell a central character in “The Dying Crapshooter’s Blues,” inspired by one of McTell’s songs; and Bob Dylan wrote that “Nobody can sing the blues like Blind Willie McTell.” Among blues enthusiasts and scholars, the body of McTell’s music is second to none. With Michael Gray’s new book on McTell, “Hand Me My Travelin’ Shoes,” we get part social history, part biography and part travelogue as Gray takes the reader on his journey in uncovering the facts of McTell’s life.

This is not simply a dry recitation of the life and music of Blind Willie McTell. He takes us back several generations to McTell’s ancestors, which include a slave owner who fought for the Confederacy and was even a prisoner of war. Using census materials, he comes across the many different spellings as well as the small rural Georgian communities, tracks what ancestors on both sides of McTell’s family did, and lived, and takes us through his birth, childhood and career as a musician who made a number of celebrated recordings during his life, yet was relatively forgotten when he passed. Using census records, old newspapers, and oral history he evokes the world McTell lived in, one of white supremacy, segregation and lynchings, yet one where McTell seemed to avoid the harshest aspects of the racist repression.

Gray tracks his life from upbringing, the school for the blind, and his homes in various communities including Statesboro and Atlanta. McTell, despite his handicap, was quite independent and able to negotiate the streets and buses of Atlanta quite well. We are taken to the places he lived, the women in his lives and how his reputation was sufficient to earn him a recording career. Gray does not over-romanticize McTell or his music. He recognizes its greatness and yet realizes that he was not a major recording star in terms of record sales. He also is sober in discussing about McTell’s music as represented on recordings. He gives us the stories underlying how the sessions came about and discusses succinctly the recordings, where they took place and gives reasoned and thoughtful analysis.

This extends beyond simply the commercial recording sessions for Victor-Bluebird, Okeh, Decca and others. There is some consideration of the Library of Congress recordings made under the auspices of John A. Lomax and Gray does spend some space noting that the original reissue of this material had some omissions, because if a few bits of speech were left off, they could get everything else on one tape and thus was issued first on record and then CD, even listed as The Complete Library of Congress Recording is not complete and omits some of McTell’s comments on songs or that he used to sing “I Got to Cross That river Jordan” which he used to sing and play with Blind Willie Johnson. And his wife Ruby was at the session and added her comments. So that the image that one has of the patronizing Lomax and other aspects Gray argues is misleading because of what was omitted.

Despite Gray including his own journey of visiting where McTell lived, walking the dusty country roads McTell walked, and visiting the buildings where McTell recorded and played, the book is still about McTell. Michael Gray has enriched us with Blind Willie McTell’s story and the legacy, and it’s a story well worth reading.

The above review originally appeared in Jazz & Blues Report’s 2009 Gift Guide published in late 2009 ([...]). If I could give half stars I probably would give 4 1/2 stars.

A Marvelously Written Story Of Mr. McTell’s Life

I’m very pleased to have the chance to tell everyone about this wonderful biography of a giant of the Country Blues, which is also much more than a book about Willie McTell. I’ve been a fan of Country Blues for over 10 years now. In my opinion, Blind Willie is one of the very best musicians of the 20th century. I purchased the UK version of this biography of Willie about a year ago via the Amazon UK website. I must say that it was a terrific read, and that the American version looks even better.

Mr. Gray tells McTell’s life story in an empathetic and passionate way. I also found all of the Civil War and Georgia-related information to be absolutely breathtaking. Mr. Gray is not only a Blues historian, but also an expert on American history. On a related note, I picked up the “Down The Tracks” dvd about Bob Dylan and found Michael Gray’s commentary to be insightful. The dvd, and this wonderful biography, are available on Amazon for a very cheap price.

Now that a book has been written about Mr. McTell, it would be appropriate if someone would publish Johnny Shines’ autobiography. Mr. Shines was right up there with Blind Willie McTell in my opinion, but is often glossed over in favor of talking about Robert Johnson, which is a true shame.

Informative and entertaining

Enjoyed it–nice job of combining the facts of McTell’s life with the story of his biographical sleuthing and, of course, the general background of McTell’s time and place. His Brit irascibility may anger some people, but I found the whole account entertaining.

Comfort, fit, look, and durability

The Rockport Pro Walker is an item that I would recommend to anyone looking for a quality casual shoe. I have been wearing them for many years. They take no “breaking in’ and fit well immediately. For someone who has experienced foot problems in the past, they are a pleasure to walk in. The shoes show excellent durablity, remaining wearable for a long time. They are well made and have a conservative yet sporty look. You could find no better value. The highest recommendation.

Prowalker from Amazon

Most Comfortable of all my shoes

I tried surfing for the best price at shoe stores, but Amazon found me the best price at Bealls, in Florida. I walk on hospital cement floors all day. Rockports are more comfortable all day for me than other brand names I have tried. Thanks Amazon.com!

Accept No Substitute

About 10 years ago my feet started to complain due to irritated nerves (people with diabetes understand); orthotics helped; sneakers helped too but I needed dressier shoes too. These shoes, in black, did the trick. I’ve tried many others, with some success, but these shoes win the prize. I buy 3 pairs at a time and rotate them – the older pairs for casual/rough wear and the newest pair goes into the courtroom (lawyers are people too, mostly). If I ever hear they are being discontinued, I may rent storage space so I can buy out the stock in my size. I own 1 pair of dressy shoes that I can wear 2 or 3 hours; but for 15 hour days, there is no substitute. Like white shirts, these shoes simplify shopping and wardrobe selection.

BEST OF THE BEST

This is by far the most comfortable shoe..

It is a outstanding walking shoe

does not need to be broken in…ready to walk or just wear

old faithful

I have been wearing the Rockport ProWalkers for many years. I wear them at work and wear out a pair every 9-12 months. They “ugly out” before they actually wear out. I have always had black and I polish them once a month or so. They are the only shoe that lasts through a Disney World vacation. I am not limping at the end of the day. When they are 4 to 6 months old I usually place a foam pad into them to renew the soft feeling.

Rockport Walking Shoe

I have worn this style of shoe for years. It is a comfortable shoe. Of course, I would suggest that you try the shoe in a store first before purchasing on the internet because you can’t judge the fit by a picture on a website. Since I had originally purchased the shoe in a store, I now purchased it on Amazon, and the quality and fit seem to be consistent.

Rockport Prowalkers

Received what I wanted and wear all the time. I like ‘em.

Excellent Fitting Shoe

My husband has been wearing this brand of shoe for over 20 years. He always has two pair working. One for yard work and one for wearing when we leave the house. They always fit, wear for years and look sharp when he wants to dress us a little. We never have to worry about the fit when ordering as they are always true to size. He is able to take them straight out of the box and wear with no breaking in period. We now have to purchase these over the internet as our local stores no longer carry them. Hopefully Rockport will not discontinue making these wonderful shoes.

Great shoe

Great Shoes

These are Great shoes, I have been walking 3 1/2 mil. per day in them starting the first day out of the box!!

Great shoe at a great price, but . . .
I have a hard time finding a “B” width in any type of shoe. I had previously purchased another model of NB and they fit perfectly; these not so much, but still fit better than the standard “D” size I usually have to buy.
My All Purpose Shoe
When I travel, I like to travel light. If possible, I only want to take one pair of lightweight shoes that can handle walking through airports, trekking, and still pass as an acceptable casual dress shoe. I got the black 811′s a little over four years ago. They served me so well that I got a brown pair of 811′s about two years ago. My 811′s have carried my heft comfortably through all sorts of weather and terrain. They still look good. I would strongly recommend this shoe to anyone. In my estimation they are a great value.
Great Shoe for Diabetic Feet
My father is a diabetic and loves these shoes. They help his feet from going numb. He has been buying them for the past seven years.
Great shoe for nurses
I have owned these shoes for several months now and they are still going strong. New Balance is pretty much the only brand of shoe I wear because they fit me so well. Being on my feet so much, I need a shoe that will keep my feet happy. These shoes do that very well. They work well on wet floors too. The pair that I wore previous to these would slip on the slightest amount of water on tile floors. These have not slipped at all. I will definitely buy these shoes again.
Hard-to-find narrow men’s shoes
These fit my dad’s narrow feet better than any other shoe he has tried. He loves them and almost never wears any other shoes. I got these for him for his birthday after he finally wore out the last pair (also New Balance walking shoes) he had worn almost daily for about the last six years… hope these will last as long. I also am extremely pleased that these shoes are MADE IN THE USA. Next time I’m in the market for sneakers, I’ll definitely be buying something made by New Balance.
always buy new balance
I have plantar fascitis which means that walking distances without orthotic shoe inserts and well supported rubber soled shoes quickly results in agonizing heel pain. Finding good walking shoes that look good at a reasonable price is almost as painful. In short, these work so well that I now have three pairs and are my shoes of choice for any activity short of dress up functions. I would note that they tend to run a tad smaller than other walking shoes and you may want to order a half size larger than normal if you have orthotic shoe inserts. Best approach is to find a store where you can try them on to verify size and then buy them from the source that offers the best price, choice and service which is usually going to be Amazon. I am really pleased with these shoes and will probably buy another pair (color) when they go on special sale.

Just another pair of shoes..

Ive paid Much LESS for other shoes.. and Got the same or better FIT and support.. I do NOT… see what the hype is all about with these shoes.. I really DONT… I have even experienced Quite a bit of discomfort, where the top strap binds across the top of my foot, causing pain and numbness, until i loosen the upper strap. I have NEVER had this sensation even with other velcro strap shoes.. I sincerely Doubt i will waste the money on another New Balance product again.

Super Comfortable

I’m a 61 year old overweight type II diabetic and I do a lot of walking in the city (San Francisco), ranging from 5-10 miles a day. My feet used to be sore after a couple miles, but since I started wearing these I can walk those 5-10 miles and I will be tired afterward, but my FEET aren’t any more tired than the rest of me. Major improvement.

My only criticisms are that the velcro cross straps are WAY too long, I ended up cutting quite a bit off with kitchen shears, and the soles are great for walking but kind of slippery for bicycling.

When I wear these out I will probably by the MW812s next time to get laces instead of velcro straps.

slipper fitting,

The sneaker has a design so the stitching doesn’t cut into your toes. The front stitching especially is raised above the side so it does not pinch into your small toe. I had a previous pair for four years or more it remained as comfortable as the day I bought them. A problem ,because of my weight, I had with all sneakers was the side would turn after a while. With this design the sneaker soul kept flat and never turned. I searched for this model and bought it again. Great design!
